the Larch

Last of four sister cabins. Identical bones — same kitchen, same morning light — named for the larch, the strange pine that goes gold in October and heats our own home all winter.

Why The Larch
The Larch — Plate 08 Plate 08 — Deep green pines stretch toward the sky, May
Botanical illustrations · a touchpoint to the name

The larch is the strange one. A pine tree that drops its needles. In spring, the larches turn the mountainsides bright lime green, brighter than anything else on the slopes — you can see them from miles away, a different green than the other conifers, almost glowing. By midsummer they’ve gone deeper green and you forget they’re different. Then fall comes and they remember.

For about three weeks every September and October, the high country goes gold. Whole hillsides of larch turning at once, a slow flowing wave of yellow that runs down the valleys until the needles drop and the trees stand bare for winter. It’s the closest thing Montana has to a New England fall, and most people who live here will tell you it’s better.

The larch is also what we use to heat our own home. It grows fast, splits clean, burns hot. Practical and beautiful at once.
